Lighter Life Diet: All you need to know

Lighter life diet weight loss plan considers different weight loss goals resulting in the splitting of the program into two. The two halves of the lighter life diet are lighter life total and lighter life lite.This weight loss plan is a combo of VLCD (Very Low Calorie Diet), meal replacement, and weekly counseling.

Lighter life total (also known as the lighter life totally different plan) is a package for people with BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or even higher. It is programmed to serve four meal replacement food packs a day with no room for ‘normal’ food. The meal replacement food packs consist of shakes, soups and bars.

The lighter life lite is programmed for people with BMI of within 25-30. The duration you choose to stay on this weight loss plan (either the lighter life total or the lighter life lite) is entirely up to you and how much weight you intend to lose.

You are provided the opportunity to clarify doubts and better understand the plan in relation to your body needs. Furthermore, the burden of calorie counting is taken off your shoulders.  You no longer have to guess what to eat or in what quantity neither do you have to spend a lot of time on grocery shopping since your meals are practically ‘on the go’ meals.


A VLCD (Very Low Calorie Diet) refers to any diet that encourages consumption of calories way below the basic caloric needs. The basic caloric need of an average man is at about 2500 calories per day and that of a woman is at about 2000 calories. A typical VLCD allows for about 1000 calories or even less per day.

The lighter life diet weight loss plan allows between 600-1200 calories per day depending on how much weight you plan on losing or depending on which of the programs you’re running (lighter life total or lighter life lite).

Lighter life diet otherwise known as the very low calorie diet(VLCD)


The fact that this plan is a Very Low Calorie Diet plan means an initial rapid weight loss. you will be cutting down on a lot of calories resulting in weight loss. there is absolutely no cause for alarm because the meal replacement packs are nutrient dense meaning that you won’t be missing out on any essentials. In addition to the meal replacement food packs being nutrient dense, you are equally advised to drink flavored water with added fiber.

In addition, the lighter life weight loss plan has provisions for when you’ve attained your weight loss goal. This means that with the lighter life diet, you won’t just be losing weight but you’ll be keeping it off as well. This diet plan makes ‘management plans’ available for when you’ve successfully reached your goal.

This management plan refers to a 12 week program. During these 12 weeks, ‘normal foods’ are gradually re-introduced. It starts up with proteins and then veggies before carbs. Remember, this can only start when you’ve reached your weight loss goal.


The induction stage or the first few weeks are usually the hardest but have proven to produce the greatest result. It seems hard because your body is trying to adjust to all the changes going on . it’s like giving up an addiction; you’re prone to go through withdrawal symptoms. In this case, the withdrawal symptoms may include;

  • Dizziness
  • Bad breath
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Nausea
  • Hair shedding (in some cases)
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin

These symptoms should clear after about two to three weeks. To be on the safe side, it is advised to discuss every single symptom with your doctor or care-giver. If the symptoms persist you might have to give up on this diet.


There are quite a few concerns with regards to the lighter life diet. Here are a few;

  1. SOCIAL ISOLATION: while on this diet you might feel isolated especially in gatherings where meals are involved. Simple things like going on lunch dates or family dinners may become a hassle especially since you are not allowed to eat conventional meals.
  2. CONTINUITY: it may be burdensome to continue this diet for long for so many reasons the most important being that it is a Very Low Calorie diet. A VLCD should not be followed for more than about 12 weeks to avoid adverse health issues.
  3. TASTE APPEAL: this should probably also come under continuity because most times when people do not follow meal replacement plans it is often because the taste of the meal replacement food packs do not appeal to them. You can’t stick to a diet when you can’t stand the meals you’re supposed to be eating.
