Just like the name implies, breakfast literally means breaking the fasting period from the previous night. It is the first meal of the day usually taken early in the morning before embarking on the activities of the day. Breakfast is most often regarded as the most important meal of the day.Breakfast is highly recommended for people on a weight loss journey. A healthy breakfast keeps you satisfied for most part of the day, curbing your cravings significantly. Skipping breakfast on the other hand tends to totally set you up for over eating and bingeing for the rest of the day. Most breakfast skippers think they are saving time and cutting calories when in actual sense, they are not. Skipping breakfast will only make you feel starved by mid-morning and lunch resulting in mindless nibbling and bingeing which in turn leads to high calorie intake.
Studies reveal that when you don’t eat breakfast, the body is left fasting for over 15-20 hours. It is called breakfast for a reason. It means breaking the fast after fasting through the night so when you don’t ‘break the fast’, you remain fasting. This means that the body is not producing the necessary enzymes needed to metabolize fat in order to lose weight. Eating early in the day triggers the body’s metabolism enabling the body to burn fat.
HEALTHY BREAKFAST MEALS
In as much as breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it shouldn’t be wrongly administered. Taking the wrong foods at breakfast may trigger the opposite of the intended results. The wise choice would be fruits and veggies. Why? Fruits and veggies are high in fiber giving you feeling of satisfaction yet keeping the calories at bay. Eating high fiber, low energy dense foods you tend to keep the calories low. This way you can eat more food and incur less fat. Here is a list of some healthy breakfast foods;
- Low fat yoghurt
- Walnuts and almond nuts
- Peanut butter
- Sweet potatoes
Like with everything else don’t overdo it because an overdose of fiber may cause constipation, an upset stomach or in some cases, diarrhea. The secret like always is portion control. These foods may be low fat but when consumed in large quantities (more than required), they have a counter effect.
Make provision for breakfast every day. It doesn’t matter how busy your schedule is. If you’re on a weight loss program, realize how important breakfast is to your progress, not just for weight loss but for your overall well being.
